these past two weeks, my student teacher taught all of the classes while i observed, helped, and organized. he took on an ambitious jackson pollack/abstract expressionist lesson. the first week, he showed abstract expressionist's work, played the token response game, and showed first grade a short pollack film. the kindergarteners also used rubber cement to add lines to paper.
the second week, the kindergarteners used primary watercolor paints to splatter and drop paint over the rubber cemented paper. they could also pick up their paper and move it to create more lines and mix their primary colors.
the first graders worked by tables on very large pieces of white paper. we began by getting paintshirts and covering shoes with plastic bags (this we learned after the first few classes of messy shoes). student teacher emphasized the ways to hold the paint brush, and how to keep things relatively clean. they each recieved a bottle of tempera with a paintbrush. then they used the tempera paint to create pollack-inspired paintings. each class that came added to the painting of the previous class. so the paintings ended with many many layers of paint.
