One of our teachers came to me with a lesson that she was working on for Valentine's day. Her class will be making 21 valentines to send all over the U.S. and Canada. In return they will receive as many from various schools. She said that the theme is "Cupcake". I immediately thought of a book that I used to make with Kindergarteners starting with a fan folded strip of paper. Each flat surface of the zig zag has something glued to it. We made ours into a cupcake consisting of hearts. The front was the cupcake wrapper. I gave the students metallic cardstock pre-cut into the wrapper shape. They used their closed scissors to draw the textured lines on the front. Then they cut out 6 hearts, 2 small, 2 medium, 2 large. We overlapped and glued the hearts. And then glued those to our strip in that order. The last step was to add a heart candle on the back of the big hearts. The most difficult part was folding the strip with the correct number of folds. That took a lot of work! Luckily, I have Student Teacher to help! The center example above is my example. The two on the side are student's work.
